Behemoth- Poland's most extreme torturous
black metal Gods, have mentally slayed mankind once again with their new
masterpiece –‘The Apostasy’. Taking a major turn from their previous
release, ‘Demigod’, Behemoth has, in my opinion picked up from where
they left off with ‘Zos Kia Cvltvs’, in a dark and very experimental
fusion of beyond insane concepts of writing, illustrated by the flawless
guitar and drum patterns.
‘The Apostasy’ begins with the feeling of “picking up
where they left off” and channelling the hate into a much darker and
“balls out” direction. The writing has grown into what I can best
describe as “A beautifully creative brutal massacre”, taking all of
their past works of art and applying what they have perfected into one
huge monster of an album. The guitars have taken more of a backbone
position, leading the song writing into a position so the drums can
“Conquer All”. The vocals are much more impressive, at least in my own
opinion than the ‘Demigod’ vox. I remember many fans being disappointed
with the FX on the ‘Demigod’ vocals and saying how layered they sounded.
‘The Apostasy’ takes a completely different approach with straight
forward and more natural sounding vocals. The overall song structure has
become much more creative and non-repetitive. ‘Demigod’ seemed to have a
very catchy feel to it, as does ‘The Apostasy’, but in a very different
feel. You can not predict what they will come up with next on this
album.
It seems that Polish bands are the only ones who
really seem to learn from their past mistakes and apply what they learn
to their next album. I definitely feel a Vesania vibe in ‘The Apostasy’.
Vesania's main man master Orion, as many of you know, plays bass in
Behemoth. This creates nothing more than a total genius backbone for
Behemoth. Completely versatile and fresh ideas towards the writing for a
band who has already time and time again, established itself as extreme
metal titans. No recycled material, no copycat ideas....Only pure
creativity in the most raw, un-conquerable form.
This album is full of the signature Behemoth “Above
All”, “Anti-Christian” outlook on humanity and its ways. I've heard many
people talk about how the “satanic vibe” in extreme metal has been done
over and over again to the point where it has become pointless. This may
be true in some cases but don't classify every band in with the weak. I
look at it this way...If the band's direction strays from all the others
with a completely fresh and new outlook, the more anti-christian, the
better. Behemoth takes their own concepts of religion and the ''human
sheep'' movements of the world and place themselves into an elite
position, above all the others. Not following others like everyone else.
This point of control makes Behemoth their own originators and places
them far away from any form of trend followers of fake copycats.
Nevermore vocalist Warrel Dane, makes an appearance
on track 9, “Inner Sanctum”. This is another surprise which no one was
expecting and I think it turned out quite tasteful. It just goes to show
how comfortable Behemoth has become in experimenting with different
things in their material and I am really glad to see this.
‘The Apostasy’ has scored a 10 out of 10 with me. The
view is fresh. The writing is fresh. The guitars are none less than
amazing and the drumming is by far Inferno's best work to date. The
overall production has a very raw, clear, crushing sound which best
suits this type of album. I had the chance to see Behemoth last month in
Philadelphia and I was shocked to see just how extreme this band has
become. Their live performances have become flawless and the energy
level on stage can be compared to nothing I've ever seen before. In
thus, I rule Behemoth's ‘The Apostasy’ as an epic extreme masterpiece.
Buy it. (Dave Kinkade)
